Dr. Rajnarayan R Tiwari

Dr. Rajnarayan R Tiwari, MBBS, MD (PSM), PhD, AFIH, MA (Public Administration), MA (Economics), MA (Sociology), FIPHA, FIAPSM, and FAMS, has been serving as the Director of the ICMR–National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (NIREH), Bhopal, since July 2016. He has previously held several distinguished leadership positions, including Director of the National Institute of Miners’ Health, Nagpur; Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Occupational Health, Ahmedabad; and Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Research in Tribal Health, Jabalpur. He also served as the General Secretary of the Ahmedabad Occupational Health Association from 2011 to 2014 and is notably the only elected Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences with expertise in Occupational and Environmental Health.

With over 30 years of experience in occupational, environmental, and public health research and teaching, Dr. Tiwari has worked on 34 projects supported by national and international agencies and has published 327 research papers in reputed national and international journals, with a primary focus on pneumoconiosis, heavy metal toxicity, and occupational aspects of child labour. He has edited two books titled Environmental and Occupational Exposures: Reproductive Impairment and Recent Trends in Environmental Health, and has guided 68 students in their dissertation and thesis work in occupational health. He is also a visiting faculty member for several prestigious institutions, including the Public Health Foundation of India, Manipal University, Sardar Patel University (Anand), Government of Gujarat institutions, IGNOU, and the National Forensic Science University. Dr. Tiwari has been honoured with four fellowships (FAMS, FIAPSM, FIPHA, and WHO Fellowship), received the ICMR National Award for research in Community Medicine in 2014, and was the recipient of the Dr. J.C. Kothari Oration Award from the Indian Association of Occupational Health in February 2024.
